Plasma exchange (PEX) is a life-saving therapeutic procedure in patients with thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) and other thrombotic microangiopathic anaemias (TMAs). However, it may be associated with significant complications, exacerbating the morbidity and mortality in this patient group

Hematite coated, conductive Y doped ZnO nanorods for high efficiency solar water splitting

    Get PDF
For the first time, hematite (α-Fe2O3) crystals were electrochemically deposited over vertically aligned conductive zinc oxide nanorods (NR) to form a specially designed 3D heterostructure with a unique triple layer structure. The structure formed with a thin layer of ZnFe2O4 sandwiched between the hematite and the ZnO, which forms a barrier to reduce the back migration of holes. Hence, the charge separation is significantly improved. The small unequal bandgaps of α-Fe2O3 and ZnFe2O4 help to enhance and broaden visible light absorption. The electron transportation was further improved by yttrium doping in the ZnO (YZnO) NRs, resulting in increased conductivity. This allowed the vertically aligned NRs to perform as electron highways, which also behave as effective optical waveguides for improved light trapping and absorption, since ZnO absorbs little visible light. All these benefits made the unique structures suitable for high performance photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Optimisation of α-Fe2O3 thickness led to a photocurrent density improvement from 0.66 to 0.95 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE. This was further improved to 1.59 mA cm−2 by annealing at 550 °C for 3 h, representing a record-breaking photocurrent for α-Fe2O3/ZnO systems. Finally IPCE confirmed the successful generation and transfer of photoelectrons under visible light excitation in the specifically designed heterostructure photoanode, with 5% efficiency for blue light, and 15% for violet light

Spectral triangulation molecular contrast optical coherence tomography with indocyanine green as the contrast agent

    Get PDF
We report a new molecular contrast optical coherence tomography (MCOCT) implementation that profiles the contrast agent distribution in a sample by measuring the agent's spectral differential absorption. The method, spectra triangulation MCOCT, can effectively suppress contributions from spectrally dependent scatterings from the sample without a priori knowledge of the scattering properties. We demonstrate molecular imaging with this new MCOCT modality by mapping the distribution of indocyanine green, a FDA-approved infrared red dye, within a stage 54 Xenopus laevis

Socioeconomic deprivation and surgical outcomes: ISOS and VISION-UK sub-study (Statistical Analysis Plan)

    Get PDF
In this paper, we aim to determine if socioeconomic deprivation in England is associated with outcomes after surgery: mortality, in-hospital complications at 30 days, and hospital length of stay. We will also identify clinical factors associated with social deprivation and assess whether adjustment for these factors modify the effect of socioeconomic deprivation on outcomes for a range of surgical categories

Evaluating Temporal Differences in Land Cover: Implications for Managing Bobwhite at the Landscape Scale in Virginia

    Get PDF
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have declined substantially across large portions of their range. A number of factors may be contributing to that decline including disease, predation, pesticides, and habitat loss. Of these, habitat loss has emerged as the primary factor. Habitat loss has occurred at large and small scales. It is relatively easy to evaluate bobwhite habitat at the micro scale, but evaluating habitat change at the landscape scale is difficult. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate a novel technique using aerial imagery and line transects to evaluate both contemporary and historic landscapes effectively, quantifying the differences observed to describe what changes, if any, occurred through time. Contemporary photos were available through the 2013 Virginia Base Mapping Program. Historic photos were obtained via United States Geological Survey (1967 – 1969). Two Virginia Quail recovery Initiative focal counties were chosen for the study, Halifax (south central Piedmont) and Sussex (southeastern Coastal Plain). A 12-class habitat categorization system was developed to use in analysis. We developed a technique that allowed photo interpreters to identify and delineate features at a large scale (\u3e 1:6000) over a wide geographic area. Thirty-five to forty transects were evaluated for each site (n = 7). Favorable habitat decline observed ranged from -2% to -49%. Favorable edge decreased through time in four of five sites in Halifax County. Favorable edge increased dramatically within both Sussex County sites, particularly in the bobwhite focal area. Overall, habitat appears to have improved in Sussex County, and declined significantly in Halifax County. Habitats differed both through time and across the landscape. The largest habitat change noted was conversion from field to forest, predominantly pine. We feel this landscape scale habitat analysis technique holds much promise across the bobwhite’s range

Acute effects of traditional resistance training on sport-specific performance in adolescent cricket players

    Get PDF
Cricket is a sport played internationally, which requires all players to partake in repetitive, high intensity bouts of exercise, to meet the anaerobic demands needed in a match. This can lead to cricket athletes undertaking resistance training to improve an aerobic performance. However, resistance training results in acute physiological stress known as exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), which has been reported to impair generic physical performance measures, subsequently impacting training practice and increasing injury susceptibility. The aim of this study was to examine the acute impact of EIMD on cricket bowling performance following traditional resistance training

METHODS: Th17 pathway cytokines were quantified in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and gene expression of IL-17A, IL-1β, IL-8 and IL-23 determined from endobronchial biopsies (EBx) in 41 stable bronchiectasis subjects and 20 healthy controls. Relationships between IL-17A levels and infection status, important clinical measures and subsequent Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection were determined. RESULTS: BALF levels of all Th17 cytokines (median (IQR) pg/mL) were significantly higher in bronchiectasis than control subjects, including IL-17A (1.73 (1.19, 3.23) vs. 0.27 (0.24, 0.35), 95% CI 1.05 to 2.21, p<0.0001) and IL-23 (9.48 (4.79, 15.75) vs. 0.70 (0.43, 1.79), 95% CI 4.68 to 11.21, p<0.0001). However, BALF IL-17A levels were not associated with clinical measures or airway microbiology, nor predictive of subsequent P. aeruginosa infection. Furthermore, gene expression of IL-17A in bronchiectasis EBx did not differ from control. In contrast, gene expression (relative to medians of controls) in bronchiectasis EBx was significantly higher than control for IL1β (4.12 (1.24, 8.05) vs 1 (0.13, 2.95), 95% CI 0.05 to 4.07, p = 0.04) and IL-8 (3.75 (1.64, 11.27) vs 1 (0.54, 3.89), 95% CI 0.32 to 4.87, p = 0.02) and BALF IL-8 and IL-1α levels showed significant relationships with clinical measures and airway microbiology. P. aeruginosa infection was associated with increased levels of IL-8 while Haemophilus influenzae was associated with increased IL-1α. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Established adult non-CF bronchiectasis is characterised by luminal Th17 pathway activation, however this pathway may be relatively less important than activation of non-antigen-specific innate neutrophilic immunity

Occult axillary node metastases in breast cancer: their detection and prognostic significance.

    Get PDF
Although the presence of axillary node metastases in breast cancer is a key prognostic indicator and may influence treatment decisions, a significant proportion of patients diagnosed as axillary node negative (ANN) using standard histopathological techniques may have occult nodal metastases (OMs). A combination of limited step-sectioning (4 x 100 microns intervals) and immunohistochemical staining (with cytokeratin (MNF.116) and MUC1 (BC2) antibodies) was used to detect OM in a retrospective series of 208 ANN patients. OMs were found in 53 patients (25%), and both step-sectioning and immunohistochemical detection significantly improved detection (P < 0.05). Detection using BC2 (25%) was superior to MNF.116 (18%) and haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) (8%). OMs were found in 51 patients using only the first and deepest sectioning levels and BC2 staining. OMs were more frequently found in lobular (38%) than ductal carcinoma (25%), and more frequently in women less than 50 years (41%) than in older women (19%). Univariate overall and disease-free survival analyses showed that the presence, size and number of OM had prognostic significance as did tumour size (disease-free only) and histological and nuclear grade (P > 0.05). Cox multivariate proportional hazard regression analyses showed that the presence and increasing size of OMs were significantly associated with poorer disease-free survival, independently of other prognostic factors (P < 0.05). However there was not a significant independent association of the presence of occult metastases with overall survival (P = 0.11). These findings have important implications with regard to selection of ANN patients for adjuvant therapy
